Best Fish Oil Supplement

If you’re one of those people who are thinking about boosting their omega-3 fatty acids, there are a few things you want to consider. First do you need more omega-3 in your diet? What type of fatty acids should you consume? What is the right source of omega-3 for you?

If you look at the research and other evidence, it would suggest that most of us could use some additional omega-3 in our daily diets. This same research has shown that omega-3 may be beneficial for good heart health and in controlling triglycerides. So the question should be what is the best way to increase omega-3 intake?

Most doctors would say that you want to get your nutrients directly from the foods you eat. So they would say that you should look to increasing your consumption of fatty fish as the source of omega-3. Another reason for eating more fatty fish is that they contain both DHA and EPA omgega-3 fatty acids. These are the best.

But as we all know, fish can contain contaminants. For this reason it has been recommended that pregnant women or women planning to become pregnant limit their fish consumption. Keep it below 12 ounces per week and you should be alright. Stick to fish such as canned tuna, salmon, catfish and shrimp that have found to be lower in mercury contamination.

Many people find it very difficult to change their eating habits. So the addition of food with increased omega-3 content some will find more than difficult. For these people there is an alternative. There is omega-3 supplements, algae oil capsules or products fortified with algae oil may be the right choice. Even for people who are otherwise health and have good eating habits, an additional boost in omega-3 might be o good idea.

So what are the best fish oil supplements? There are generally three types of omega-3 supplements that are the best. The most popular is fish oil made from fish like anchovies and sardines. This contains both of the important omega-3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA. There are other supplements derived from plant sources like flaxseed. These contain ALA which can be broken down in the body to small amounts of EPA and DNA.

So now you have to decide. Most experts would probably agree that a fish oil supplement is your best choice. The benefits of fish oil have been researched much more than any other source of omega-3 fatty acids.  Supplements derived from plant sources or algae just don’t result in as much EPA and DNA in the body. However, if you just can’t stand fish or you’re a vegetarian, than a plant derived supplement may be your best choice.

The bottom line is this. Consuming fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids is always your best choice. But if you just can’t do that for whatever reason, then get those little yellow pills of fish oil. This will give you the most in terms of EPA and DNA. That after all, is what you want to have for the most health benefits.
